Our Research

The Feline Futures research program aims to investigate aspects of kitten socialization, behavioural development, and the human-animal bond, with the ultimate goal of improving feline welfare. The program employs an interdisciplinary approach, using quantitative and qualitative methods to gain a holistic understanding of the factors influencing the welfare of kittens and their human companions.

Using epidemiological study designs and methods and a One Welfare framework, Feline Futures explores the following research topics:

  • Kitten socialization and behavioural development
    • Exploring key developmental milestones of the socialization period
    • Investigating the impact of early experiences on long-term behaviour and adaptability to the forever home
  • Human-animal bond
    • Examining the interconnections between human well-being, animal welfare, and environmental factors on the development and evolution of the human animal bond
    • Investigating the role of positive interactions, communication, and companionship on maintaining a strong bond
  • Welfare and behaviour assessment and intervention
    • Developing standardized protocols for assessing kitten welfare in various environments
    • Identifying indicators of stress and behavioural issues in kittens and implement early mitigation strategies
    • Evaluating the effectiveness of enrichment programs, socialization techniques, and preventative healthcare measures
  • Longitudinal studies
    • Tracking the development of kittens beyond the socialization window, focusing on behavioural changes, health outcomes, and evolution of the human-animal bond
    • Identifying patterns that contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between human, animal, and environmental factors over time
  • Community engagement and education
    • Developing resources for kitten and cat caretakers, foster parents, shelter workers and volunteers, and the public about the importance of early socialization, understanding behaviour, and responsible caretaking
    • Collaborating with veterinary professionals, animal shelters, and community organizations to disseminate research findings and implement best practices
